Prof. Juan Pablo Lupi publishes Reading Anew: José Lezama Lima’s Rhetorical Investigations (Madrid: Iberoamericana-Vervuert, 2012), a study about the verbal and aesthetic experience of Lezama’s poetry and his theories about culture and history. Divided in three parts—“Metaphor,” “Island,” “Allegory”—the book analyzes Lezama’s singular ideas and mode of writing through the prisms of his own (mis)readings of certain canonical authors (Aristotle, Mallarmé, the German Romantics, etc.), theories of metaphor from antiquity until the present, and the debates on tradition and cultural identity in pre-revolutionary Cuba.
